After cultural life almost came to a standstill in the past few months, organizers and organizers are currently trying to bring cultural flair back to the city with small formats in August.
The popular Gera Museum Night had to be canceled this year. Alternatively, the city museums will take part in the summer cultural event with their event “Evenings in the Museum” on Saturday, August 29th, from 6 to 10 pm, and invite those interested to use the later hours to visit the museum together.
They all offer, for example, guided tours, lectures and specials. The offers are designed for the family. The focus is on the current special exhibitions. Surprises are also prepared. Here are some program excerpts.
Historic caves
Individual immersion in Gera’s underworld between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. is only possible on this evening. Last entry is at 9 p.m.
City Museum Gera
On August 29, the house will be presenting outstanding new acquisitions from the last few years, for example the probably first photographs of Gera citizens from the 1840s and the oldest known work by a Gera goldsmith, a silver cup from 1818. The lecture room is on the first floor , 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. In addition, the special shows “Loved, Hated, Tolerated – Groschenhefte in the GDR” and “Dunkelheit” can be visited.
Museum of Natural History Gera
“It’s all about sex” is the title of the special animal tour on the ground floor. Zoologist René Köhler invites you with the current special exhibition “I don’t like to live alone – animal-friendly” (6.15pm, 7pm, 7.45pm, 8.30pm and 9.15pm). As for the sex life of our four-legged relatives, the nature of lifelong loyalty and planned cheating via harems, free love has a lot to offer.

“Behind the scenes! Treasures in Gera’s oldest attic ”can be admired on the 2nd floor, attic entrance in the anteroom of the baroque hall. There will be presentations by taxidermist Rainer Michelsson (6.15 p.m., 7.00 p.m., 7.45 p.m., 8.30 p.m. and 9.15 p.m.).
Art collection Gera – Orangery
You can visit the permanent exhibition of Otto Dix – Works from 1944 to 1969 from the Gera Collection. There are also two special exhibitions “Wondrous Really. Magical Realism from the Netherlands ”.
The second exhibition is titled “Louise te Poele – Photographs”. The young Arnhem artist Louise te Poele (born 1984) mainly refers in her partly large-format photographic works to still life painting, which developed in Holland and Flanders at the beginning of the 17th century and where it flourished.
In the “Wonderful Real” exhibition, children and their families can look forward to an exciting museum quiz. Here, big and small picture explorers are in demand, who reveal the secret of the magical worlds and thus get on the track of the riddles. At the end of the tour everyone receives a small reward.
Guided tours are also planned. The south wing is invited to the magic of the picture (6.30 p.m. to 7 p.m.). What to do if you are lovesick is the motto in the central pavilion from 7.30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Information is available from 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on life and style change at Otto Dix – works from 1944 to 1969 from the Gera collection in the north wing.
Life in quarantine is from 9 pm to 9.30 pm in the south wing. And midnight poetry awaits the guests from 9.30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the south wing.
Otto Dix House
Tours will be from 7 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and from 8.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The topic of the first tour is “From a flat ford to a wading giant – Otto Dix: Works from the Gera collection, works from 1907 to 1944”. The second is entitled tobacco smoke and the scent of roses: Otto Dix: Works from the Gera Collection – Works from 1907 to 1944.
Museum of Applied Arts Gera
In the Museum of Applied Art the exhibitions “SIBYLLE. Women and Fashion in the GDR ”and“ Art Deco and Functionalism. Applied arts between the world wars ”. The “SIBYLLE” was considered the “VOGUE” of the GDR. As a magazine for fashion and culture, it has become a coveted but rare source of the latest trends and inspiration for East German women. In the museum’s permanent exhibition, numerous exhibits relating to handicrafts, fashion, design, home decor and photography are presented.
The short tours, 30 minutes each, to both expositions take place at 6.30 p.m., 7.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. The SIBYLLE rally “Discover the works of art in the“ SIBYLLE ”exhibition with an exciting quiz!” The eager teammates can expect a little surprise.
