Channel: a cruel lack of volunteers for the Secours Populaire …

Volunteers take care of food and clothing.

They say misery doesn’t take a vacation. Unfortunately, this is the case, much to the chagrin of Secours Populaire de la Manche. The latter can no longer carry out its missions, lack of volunteers. Following the call made in June 2021, “A few people came, I saw new ones” indicates a volunteer from the association.

Before adding: “But we are always looking for volunteers. »For example, the room which should have opened at Octeville (delegated municipality of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, Handle) remained closed, for lack of free people. “The new people mainly take care of sorting the laundry,” explains the volunteer.

A complicated season

THE‘summer is a tough season for Secours Populaire. With the holidays, regulars are not always available. So much so that hotlines come to close, and spaces to restrict their reception hours. The clothing space of Querqueville is therefore only open on Thursday afternoons.

In the English Channel, near 30,000 people, each year, benefit from aid from Secours Populaire. The association knows through the whole department about 350 volunteers, which ensure the sustainability of the services offered.

“Happiness days”

On August 11 and 18, the Secours Populaire will organize its Happiness Days. These are outings for families, which will take place at Champrépus zoo. For a small financial contribution, the entrance and the transport will be taken care of. Only the snack is to be prepared. Nearly 400 people are expected over the two days.
