UOW Malaysia KDU Computer Science student bags first prize at AIA Hackathon 2022

Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) student, Lai Min Jia bagged the first prize of RM5000 at the recently held AIA hackathon 2022 from 27th – 28th June 2022. Min Jia’s team beat off 7 other teams to showcase an innovative and creative solution to solve the business challenge around sustainability and the future of the insurance industry.

AIA Malaysia in partnership with HumanInc organised a one-and-a-half-day long competition exclusively for students who will soon be graduating and looking to kick start their exciting careers in the technology related fields. The objective was to help AIA build the future of insurance, mental health and sustainability.

Final year student, Min Jia along with her teammates from Sunway University, Monash University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman responded to the real-world business challenge surrounding the Insurance industry and sustainability by building a new and improved innovation solution. Through their research, the team established that with the advent of advanced electronics in automotive vehicles today, a vast amount of data can be collected from the telematics device or On-Board Diagnostics (ODB). The collected data is key to the team’s idea to gamify automotive insurance in relation to the plant a tree initiative, where consumers can track their carbon footprint through vehicle usage. The carbon footprint emission values enable users to plant more trees and earn actual incentive rebates from the Insurance provider.

The judges were impressed not only with the development of the prototype but with the team dynamics as well, especially when all 4 team members were complete strangers. Each team member knew their roles immediately and worked together to strive for excellence. Sustainability is one of the key areas of the empowerment plan within UOW Global, where graduates not only learn about environmental protection but play a part in creating long-lasting efforts for economic and social development of the community and the nation.

The syllabus ensures the students are provided with a strong grasp in the fundamentals in computing, learning the basics of programming to using complex algorithms in designing, building, and testing applications and systems.
