In the world of the rich and famous, it can never be enough. Bugatti, Pagani and Co. are always competing for the favor of the jet set with new models. Now the traditional British brand Rolls-Royce trumps everything that has come before. And they even go into series production with them.
But the term series only describes the fact that Goodwood has now opened a new department. Rolls-Royce Coachbuild will now manufacture individual pieces in series according to customer requirements. Completely handcrafted and each one is absolutely unique, where everything is possible that is technically feasible.
This is also the case with the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, the first work of the new department. The idea for it arose immediately after the Sweptail was made, which caused a sensation in 2017 with a price of just under 13 million pounds. But the boat tail goes a few steps further.
After all, the original definition of luxury is that it is a hand-made or custom-made item for the wealthy. And today’s understanding of luxury relates more to brand name and price, less to the unique character and the real craftsmanship. The Coachbuild program wants to do away with this and set an example with the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail.
When money doesn’t matter
With a length of 5.80 m, the Boat Tail presents itself as a yacht for the road. Two-tone blue, of course in unique color nuances, merges into a wooden deck at the stern. There is also plenty of chrome and a wraparound windshield, just like an expensive speedboat.
The roof is also noteworthy. A convertible top has never been more impractical because it is a fixed part. You can take it off, but then you have to leave it in place. But the owner shouldn’t care.
Because he paid 20 million pounds for his Rolls-Royce Boat Tail and thus enough change for a top transport. He also has enough money for a decent selection of vintage champagnes. Because the bar in the aft has extra space for the owner’s favorite bottles.
The missing hood is not a problem in blazing sun, because the Boat Tail has a foldable parasol. Cocktail tables and special porcelain with platinum decoration are also on board.
The fact that the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is also suitable for driving, on the other hand, seems rather uninteresting. The British make no information about the engine or the power. But that’s the way it was before, when people always talked about “sufficient” motorization.
