Rides, food and music part of second day of Jackson County Fair
JACKSON, MI — Joyce Jones has been attending the Jackson County Fair her whole life — first as a child and now as a mother of her own children.
For Jones, of Jackson, the fair is a fun activity before her three kids return to school. Growing up, Jones didn’t like rides, but her kids’ favorite is a fair classic.
“The swings are their favorite,” Jones said.
Another fair classic — the merry-go-round — brought the longest lines on the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 9. The ride was part of “Kiddie Land,” an area intended for the fair’s youngest attendees. Rides for older children and families alike include the Scrambler, Ferris wheel and Cliff Hanger.
The fair continues through Aug. 14 at the Jackson County Fairgrounds/Keeley Park, 104 W. Ganson St.

While the forecast predicted rain for Monday afternoon, the day remained sunny, dry and windy. The lack of rain let Rhonda Withrow enjoy the day with her grandchildren.
The family started the day by looking at the 4H animals — which include goats, horses, rabbits, sheep and more. The fair is a fun way to enjoy time with her grandchildren, Withrow said.
Lines were also steady for a fair staple – the food. People sought their favorite fried favorites, like corn dogs, funnel cakes and French fries. Other classics, like lemonade and cotton candy, also had lots of customers. As attendees made their orders, live music played in the background.
The night finished with a live performance from contemporary Christian band MercyMe.

On Tuesday, Aug. 10, fans can look forward to a live performance from former Eagles guitarist Don Felder, Black Stone Cherry and Walker Montgomery. Felder is a replacement for southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, which was forced to cancel at the fair due to a band member testing positive for COVID-19.
