The adult education center invites you to take a free online tour of the Brandhorst Museum to the works of the American artist Cy Twombly on Thursday, March 18, from 7.30 p.m. Registration is required in order to receive the link to the online platform Zoom. Participants follow the event live at home in front of the computer. A camera and microphone are not required.

Cy Twombly (1928-2011) was born in Virginia, USA and is one of the most influential contemporary artists. Starting from Abstract Expressionism, he developed an idiosyncratic gestural style with “awkward” characters in writing, which he increased to monumental proportions on large-format canvases. No other artist of the 20th century has embarked so unconditionally on the “zero point” of modern art as Twombly. Writing exercises by children, absent-minded scribbles and graffiti on house walls serve as contemporary starting points for him to update the experience of mythical stories and to draw an arc on the major themes of Mediterranean cultural history. With more than 200 works – paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs – from different creative periods, the Brandhorst Collection has the most important holdings of the artist in Europe.

During the online tour with director Achim Hochdörfer through the exhibition rooms, the audience learns how Cy Twombly incorporated verses from well-known poets into the design of his late “roses” pictures.

The event is part of the online lecture series vhs.wissen live and takes place in cooperation with the Brandhorst Museum.
