Culinary: is the meat coming from the laboratory now? Research is in full swing

War makes people inventive. The writer Alexandre Dumas reports on this in a culinary anecdote that is extraordinarily instructive. In the run-up to a battle, according to Dumas, Marshal Richelieu had an appetite for an opulent meal. The marshal was the notorious cardinal’s great-nephew and for that reason alone did not despise food. When he informed an officer of his hunger, the latter had to disappoint him by pointing out that there were hardly any supplies left. To which the cardinal replied pointedly:
