Residents in Brampton and the GTHA looking to get into the vast field of computer science are in luck – one of the best places to study is nearby at Algoma University.

Located downtown at the centre of Brampton’s Innovation District, Algoma’s School of Computer Science and Technology (SCST) has begun offering a Bachelor of Computer Science degree. It’s one of the newest but already one of the most popular programs offered at the Brampton Campus and is now open for applications.

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Science degree at Algoma have opportunities to learn from world-class professors in state-of-the-art classrooms, all while being a part of a small tight-knit community dedicated to their overall success.

The School of Computer Science and Technology is known internationally for having one of the most advanced Computer Games Technology specializations, making Algoma a dynamic and exciting place to learn. Students and researchers from all over the world come to learn and grow their skills in advanced computer labs.

Here are a few factors that make Algoma’s School of Computer Science and Technology one of the best places to study:

  1. Options to tailor the program to your needs.

Every student has different needs, which is why the School of Computer Science and Technology Bachelor of Computer Science degree can be completed in multiple different ways. Students can choose the three-year degree (general), four-year degree (honours), and even an accelerated degree – students who already hold a degree in a discipline other than computer science or a diploma in computer science can earn a Computer Science degree in as little as one year, depending on their previous credentials.

Further options include the choice to take in-person classes at Algoma’s conveniently located downtown campus, or to take your classes online. Students can start the program in January, May, or September.

  1. Small class sizes and intimate learning.

Algoma aims to be community-oriented and accessible in all of its programs. Average class sizes in the program are approximately 25-20 students, allowing for a learning experience on an intimate scale. That means students get more access to their professors, and professors can offer a personalized approach to help each individual succeed. The small class sizes also allow students to work closely with their peers, with numerous opportunities for experiential, hands-on, and cross-cultural learning.

  1. Co-op opportunities and great job prospects with high starting salaries.

For career-focused students looking for excellent job prospects, this degree is for you. The Bachelor of Computer Science degree opens pathways to various careers that offer high starter-level salaries, benefits, and opportunities for further growth. Examples include Software Engineer, System Analyst, Database Administrator, Game Developer, and many others.

Students can also land exciting co-op work placements to supplement their education and get paid work experience in their field. Exclusive access to job postings and career development workshops helps students fast track their career and finance their education, all at the same time.

  1. Unique, interesting courses and specializations.

Computer science is anything but boring, which is why the School of Computer Science and Technology’s computer science program features a variety of courses that are uniquely interesting and interactive, including Computer Game Design, Mobile Application Development, Information Technology Security, and Privacy Human-Computer Interaction.

Students earning their computer science degree can choose to specialize in Mobile Software Engineering, Computer Game Technology, or Computer Game Technology with Creative Arts. Whether you’re interested in game development or building mobile apps and software, there’s a specialization here for you.

  1. World-class professors with years of experience.

The faculty and staff members of Algoma’s School of Computer Science and Technology are composed of a number of accomplished professors with years of experience in their respective fields. That includes professors like Mrs. Cathy Chen who has over 10 years of computer science teaching and research experience, and was a visiting Scholar at the University of Massachusetts and Penn State University in the research field of Software Engineering. There’s also assistant professor Dr. Bodrul Alam, who has expertise in cloud computing, optimization, reliability analysis, and reliable resource management.

  1. Innovative and comfortable new classrooms and student centres.

As part of the school’s recent renovations, Algoma has built innovative classrooms with new technology (such as convenient touchscreen monitors) for a better learning experience that promotes classroom discussion and collaboration.

Their brand new student centre was designed with student feedback in mind, and is the ideal place to study, hang out, or just relax in between classes. There are also a number of comfortable lounges throughout the campus, including the sixth floor lounge which offers a stunning view of downtown Brampton.

  1. A convenient location that’s close to some of the best facilities in Brampton.

For students studying locally at the Brampton campus, getting to and from campus is super easy – it’s located just a few minutes away from the Brampton GO station and downtown Brampton bus terminal. Its location in Brampton’s urban core means it’s also close to some of the city’s best destinations: Garden Square, Rose Theatre, PAMA, Brampton Library’s Four Corners Branch, YMCA, Gage Park, and some of the best restaurants and shops in the city – perfect for grabbing a bite or window shopping between classes. There’s always something to do downtown, with regular events throughout the year.

Algoma’s School of Computer Science and Technology’s mission is to help students flourish and prepare them for a fulfilling career in the technology industry or in research and academia.

With high starter-level salaries, great job prospects, and many other benefits, now’s the perfect time to get your university degree in computer science! Apply now or take a campus tour.
