Athol Daily News – Car enthusiasts show off their wheels at final Orange Drag Strip Reunion

ORANGE — Len Chaloux as soon as owned two 1966 Ford Fairlane GTs, 1 for drag racing and 1 for road driving. He sold equally vehicles to pay for a down payment on a home, but always skipped the autos.

When Chaloux retired in 2019, he went on an 11-thirty day period-extended mission to come across his outdated mates. He discovered the motor vehicle of his goals in Florida in February 2020. The Orange Municipal Airport drag races have been first held on July 18, 1954, when the Massachusetts Automotive Council obtained authorization to use the airport for “acceleration trials.” The following calendar year, the New England Timing Association took over and ran the drag races until the conclusion of racing in Orange in 1970.

John Durfee was too young to observe the first races, but his sister was able to go to. He launched the reunion of this celebration in 2011. Bernie Brouillet remembers heading out to supper across from the Orange Municipal Airport on Father’s Day Sunday in 1964, when he was 16 yrs outdated. As he sat with his loved ones, he grew antsy listening to revving engines throughout the street from the drag racers.

“They have been hitting speeds at 133 miles per hour,” Brouillet claimed. His enthusiasm for autos has not waned because.
